Penelope Cruz has recently stirred up anger in animal rights activists after the star has signed Spanish ‘Manolete’, the bullfighter movie.
The Spanish actress has been attacked by animal activists due to the contract with her latest movie Manolete, which is about a legendary matador who was killed by a bull in a bullring while he was at the top of the fame in his life.
Anti-bullfighting campaigners say the 34-year-old actress supports a cruel sport and they are not happy that she has joined such a film.
In the Manolete, Penelope Cruz gets a role of a voluptuous actress Lupe Sino, who had a turbulent affair with Manolete, played by 2003 Oscar Winner Adrien Brody.
The makers of this Spanish-English production, which will be released in England in early 2009, reveal that the pair does not approve of bullfighting by starring in the movie but they have signed because the strong plot really attracted them.
The actress seems to have been more harshly attacked than Adrien Brody by the animal rights campaigners since they had always thought Penelope took their side.
The producer of the movie Andres Vicente Gomez insists that the Manolete will not glamourise the cruel sport – bullfighting.
The film has a romantic plot and there is no blood although there is a scene displaying a bullfight. However, the scene shows only the fighting bulls, no animal suffering or blood shown.
“In no way did bulls suffer for this film”, the Telegraph quoted Andres Vicente Gomez, as saying.
The Spanish producer tried to help Penelope and Adrien by saying that despite their participation in the film, the two never support bullfighting and adding that the Vanilla Sky actress even opposes it.
“Penelope took the role because she thinks it will be a good film,” said Andres.
The CAS International, Europe’s largest anti-bullfighting organisation, Jordi Casamitjana, says, “The film makes the matador the good guy and Franco and the Fascists the bad guys, so inevitably it will make a hero out of a man who tortures animals for a living. Even if we do not see any bulls suffering, it will make bullfighting seem a good thing.”
