Mariah Carey is honoured to receive a special award at the 36th Annual American Music Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night (November 23).
The 38-year-old singer, who has swept five Grammy Awards and regarded as the third best-selling female and sixteenth overall recording artist, was paid the special tribute by actor-turned-singer Terrence Howard.
While holding the award, Terrence gave a little speech, saying, “We want to salute her for a couple of amazing achievements so we have something special to present to her, and I’d like to read the inscription: The American Music Awards honours Mariah Carey for surpassing two of the longest-standing records in music history, formally held by Mr. Elvis Presley. In 2008, Mariah Carey became the solo artist with the most number one hits of all time.”
“In addition, Mariah has spent more weeks at number one than any other artist in the history of recorded music,” added Terrace, who was a nominee of an Academy Award.
After the brief speech, Nick Cannon took his wife to the stage and kissed her hand before she performed her new hit tune ‘I Stay in Love’.
At the backstage of the event, Mariah Carey and Nick revealed about a future plan to start a family.
Nick tells The Insider he and Mariah do have plans in minds to build a family.
“That’s the whole purpose of marriage — is to build a family, and when we start building a family we’ll let ya’ll know,” Nick says.
Meanwhile, Simon Cowell, who is best known as a judge on several TV shows such as American Idol and The X Factor, assessed Mariah Carey that she is no longer a great singer she used to be.
He told Live magazine, “To me, the greatest singer is Mariah Carey, but she’s lost it. She needs to go back to singing ballads. You have to stick with doing what you do best. Be honest. Know yourself.”
