Charlize Theron, a South African-American actress, has been chosen as the newest UN Messenger of Peace, turning herself into a heroine to end violence against women and girls around the world.
The Oscar winning actress was introduced to her new role on November 24 by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who stated that Charlize was taking on her new responsibilities “very humbly, with a very excited heart.”
Charlize Theron, who rose to fame in late 1990s after her lead roles in 1997 The Devil’s Advocate and 1998 Mighty Joe Young, sends a strong message saying violence against women and girls was unacceptable in her forthcoming travel to give Ban a hand in a campaign ‘UNite to End Violence against Women’.
According to U.N. report “one of every five women worldwide will be a victim of rape or attempted rape at some point in their lifetime, and at least one of every three women is likely to be beaten, coerced into sex or abused in some other way.”
The main reason why the issue is really important for her is that she was there when her mother shot her alcoholic father to death, when she was 15, because he was threatening the family.
The 33-year-old actress won an Oscar for Best Actress when she starred in 2003 Monster, which she played domestic violence victim turned serial killer.
She said, “This is something that has been very dear to me, and disturbing to me for a long time.”
This was not her first time being an activist. She has been dubbed a dedicated one since 1999 when she was a part of South Africa Rape Crisis before funding the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project to promote HIV/AIDS education among poor kids and their families.
Other celebs who have been chosen as messengers for UN are Angelina Jolie, Michael Douglas, George Clooney, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Paulo Coelho, Nobel laureate Elie Wiesel, Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein of Jordan and many others.
